Safe Handling and Storage of Essential Oils

Factors influencing the storage of aromatherapy products include:

• Air – Oxidation can pose a challenge, and essential oils are best preserved when their containers are filled to minimize air exposure. When oxygen interacts with the compounds in essential oils, it can alter their therapeutic properties. For instance, the aldehydes in citrus oils like lemon can convert into acids, while oils rich in monoterpenes may form sensitizing hydroperoxides. Additionally, the antibacterial properties of lemongrass oil can diminish upon oxidation. Once a bottle is opened, air replaces the used oil, which is manageable if the product is consumed within a reasonable timeframe. The degradation process is further accelerated by heat and light.

• Temperature – Heat accelerates oxidation, so storing oils in a cool environment (around 65°F/18°C) is ideal for prolonging their shelf life, particularly for blends of essential and carrier oils. Rapid temperature fluctuations can be more detrimental than gradual seasonal changes.

• Light – Essential oils should be kept in dark-colored glass bottles—such as dark amber, green, or black—for optimal protection. Blue glass does not shield the oil from certain harmful light rays, nor does clear glass.

• Cautions:
– Keep them away from open flames, as they are very flammable!
- Always store essential oils out of children's reach.
- Be cautious when handling essential oil bottles to avoid skin contact with undiluted oil and prevent transferring it to sensitive areas like your nose, face, and neck.
- Refrain from using oils if your skin is cracked or irritated.
- If aromatherapy products are not stored under optimal conditions, their molecular structure may change, potentially leading to altered therapeutic effects and unwanted reactions, such as skin irritation or sensitization.
- Avoid direct sunlight storing.
- Because essential oils are volatile, they will often react with plastic, causing contamination, so avoid using plastic bottles.
- When you're not using essential oils, make sure to cap them securely. They can evaporate quickly due to their volatile nature if left uncapped.
